In the early 1930s, Walker Evans worked with Lincoln Kirstein to create illustrations for a publication on 19th century architecture, and he made several photographs of Victorian houses in the Boston area. While the book was never completed, an exhibition was organized for the Museum of Modern Art in 1933 and traveled to 14 additional venues. The format and mounting of this print suggests that it was made for exhibition.
