Keenan Wade Ranson Shute (American (Georgia), 20th century). "London Bridge"-1976, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Modern and abstract painting rendered with overlapping geometric forms with black sketchy lines delineating forms in red, white, French gray and gold. Forms clustered toward center of composition and along central line. Inscribed on verso of stretcher with artist name and title. Framed approximately 30.5" x 36.5". Unframed approximately 24" x 30". Note: Keenan Shute was the wife and student of Benjamin Shute. Benjamin Shute (American, 1905-1986) was an artist, arts advocate and co-founder of the Atlanta College of Art. Shute trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to Atlanta in 1928 to work temporarily for the High Museum School of Art in a teaching capacity. His position and efforts with the High Museum School of Art were long lasting--he worked at the institution for approximately six decades, and helped build the art school's reputation through its national accreditation. In the mid 1940s, Shute established the Southeastern Annual Exhibition that showcased work from 9 states in the Southern region. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York, Art Institute of Chicago, the Brooklyn Museum, and Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. In 1985, the artist was awarded the Governor's Award in the Arts for Georgia.
