Leander Allen Plummer II (Maine, Massachusetts, 1857-1914) Striped Bass Signed and dated "L. A. Plummer 1911" l.r. Deeply relief-carved and painted wood, depicting a large bass framed by swirling waters above four smaller fish, all amongst kelp, crustaceans, and other sea life, 33 x 59 1/2 in., mounted in a deep black frame. Condition: Good. Provenance: According to a statement from the consignor, this carving comes from the collection of Dr. Charles Goddard Weld, a native of Brookline, Massachusetts, and a contemporary of the artist. Dr. Weld was a man of science, a sportsman, a traveler, an art collector, and a philanthropist. He most likely commissioned the carving himself with a visit to the artist's studio in New Bedford. Plummer completed this work in the same year (1911) that Dr. Weld died. The carving hung in a home built by Dr. Weld on the coast of Maine for over a century.
