English, mid 19th century. A lacquered papier mache ladies' sewing or work box on stand, having an octagonal top and fluted base with a molded edge, painted and inlaid with mother of pearl flowers, opening to reveal outer storage compartments, with a deep lidded compartment for storing work, resting on three spider legs, with allover painted gilt scrolled and foliated decoration. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 29.25", diameter 18.5".
