Sheffield, mid-19th century. A silverplate and cut glass three-piece decanter set, each cut glass decanter with acorn finial lid, silver element with grape cluster and leaf motif, with three rocaille form feet, with inscription "Presented to Robert Commbes by his backers to commemorate his defeat of Robert Newell in two scullers matches Sept 10 and Oct 15 1842", marked to underside with hand contained in rectangle over "862". Overall approximately 13" x 10.75" x 10.75". Each decanter approximate height 10". Note: the hand hallmark was known to have been used by the following Sheffield, England silversmiths: Padley, Parkin & Co., Padley, Parkin & Staniforth, Nathaniel Smith & Co., William Padley, William Padley & Son, William Padley & Son LTD.
