American, late 19th century. An allegorical carved and ebonized wood Rococo Revival hall tree, possibly reflecting the American Centennial of 1876, having a serpentine form, the top with a crested Native American chief wearing a breast plate and a ceremonial headdress, supported by scrolls decorated wit clustered fruit, flanked on either side by partially nude female figures, mounted with hat hooks, the center with a decorative frieze with carved rosettes, atop of a lion, holding a crest in his mouth, flanked by winged dragons holding a rod for storage, the bottom with a grotesque mask, above a shallow carved shelf, the bottom mounted with a scrolled drop. Apparently unmarked. Approximate height 77", width 42", depth 4".
