Claude Raillard (French, d. 1708), late 17th to early 18th century. Scarce Louis XIV period brass mounted religieuse clock of rectangular form with ebonized wood case surmounted by cornice top, boulle inlay on front panel with brass line borders surrounding tortoiseshell border, glazed front protecting dial with engraved brass chapter ring with Roman numerals and Arabic numbers, scrolled foliate and florals in spandrels, lower medallion marked "Raillard Paris", exposed bell at top of case (missing top front element), shaped glazed panels on sides of case (one door with key escutcheon for access to movement), sliding back ebonized wood door opens to reveal mechanism within marked "Claude Raillard Paris". Overall approximate height 14.3", width 10.7", depth 5.1". Note: A similar clock by Claude Raillard sold above at Christie's, Amsterdam on their December 19, 2007 sale, "The P.C. Spaans Collection of Important European Clocks" as Lot 476. Claude Raillard came from a family of clockmakers and in the mid-17th century produced a clock and a watch for Cardinal Mazarin. Christie's has noted that French clockmakers such as Raillard were influenced by Dutch clockmakers at the time.
