circa 1880 oil on canvas 46 x 61 cm (18 1/8 x 24 in. ) LOT NOTES Isaac Burns Murphy was one of the most famous jockeys in American Thoroughbred horse racing history, the first American jockey elected to Racings Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs. An African-American, he was born in Clark County, Kentucky, and became a jockey at the age of 14. By 1876, Murphy had won eleven races at the Lexingto`s Kentucky Association Track. He rode in his first Kentucky Derby in 1877, and won the Kentucky Derby for the first time on May 27, 1884 at Churchill Downs. He would go on to win the Kentucky Derby again in 1890 as well as 1891.
