Small Polychrome Transfer-decorated Liverpool Pottery Creamware Pitcher, England, early 19th century, decorated on one side with a three-masted sailing ship, the other with a yellow ribbon reading "GOD SPEED THE PLOW" above farming implements and the phrase "He that by the plow would thrive/Himself must either hold or drive," and inscribed below the spout "James Barr/Salem," (minor chips on spout and base), ht. 4 1/2 in. Note: According to an old note with the pitcher, Captain James Barr of Salem was born in 1754 and died in 1848.
