Chippendale Mahogany Reverse Serpentine Slant-lid Desk, New England, late 18th century, the lid opening to a fitted interior of valanced compartments and drawers, over a reverse serpentine case, raised on carved claw-and-ball feet, (imperfections), ht. 45, wd. 42, dp. 23 in. Provenance: Originally owned by a Marshfield, Massachusetts, family, descended in the Lowell family to Abbot Lawrence Lowell (1856-1943), president of Harvard College, educator and legal scholar. Then to the estate of Dr. James Woodward Wallace, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
