Whaling Lance, Ambrose J. Peters, New Bedford, Massachusetts, late 19th century, wrought iron with steel blade lance mounted on an octagonal shaft, the head stamped "A.J.P." and "CAST STEEL," lg. 115 1/2 in. Note: Ambrose J. Peters worked as a blacksmith in New Bedford in 1879. He began working for James D. Driggs on Merrill's Wharf in 1893 and took over the business in 1902. Peters' shop survives as a exhibit at Mystic Seaport.
