gouache, watercolor, pastel and pencil on paper 76. 5 x 56.8 cm (30 1/8 x 22 3/8 in.) stamped with signature lower left PROVENANCE Estate of the artist Christie`s, New York, May 7, 2008, lot 129 Acquired at the above sale by the present owner EXPERTISE The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Comité Chagall. A copy of the certificate is available upon request. LOT NOTES Marc Chagall and his beloved wife Bella traveled the Mediterranean and the South of France during the spring of 1926. As this was his first time seeing the sea, the artist was deeply impressed by such different surroundings that influenced both his personality and style of painting. The bright light, the crisp colors of the water confronting rich tones of trees and exotic flowers, and, most importantly, the lovers - these are the main features of Chagall`s works executed in Southern France. Even though the present lot was created decades after that determinant trip, the vibrant tone of artist`s fresh impression and almost naive fascination still lingers in colors and trickles through shapes.
