This $5 Confederate note has a sailor leaning against a cotton bale in the center. Along the right side of the note are two women, one of which is holding a set of scales. In the lower left corner of the note is a picture of C.G. Memminger. This note was printed with black ink. There is no design on the back. No. 65436. Marked "Six months after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States and the United States, the Confederate States of America will pay Five Dollars to bearer/ Richmond September 2, 1861/ Fundable in Eight per cent stock or bonds of The Confederate States/ Receivable in payment of all dues except export duties/ B. Duncan Richmond" and signed in two places. Measures approximately 2-7/8" x 6-3/4". Good overall condition and has been housed in plastic sheath. Provenance: Private Virginia collector.
