Japanese, 19th century or older. A katana sword of traditional form comprising long ray skin tsuka wrapped with amber cotton tsuka-ito over dragon form menuki, with lotus form tsuba over floral chased fuchi, with copper alloy hibaki, and curving steel one-sided blade, with ebonized carved wood saya bearing copper alloy kojiri, kuri-kata, and further adornments, with purple threaded sageo cord. Signed to nakago or tang "Hisashi Yoshi" or "Yoshinaga" as well as with provence. Overall length in saya approximately 41". Length of blade approximately 27". Note: signature could refer to Hisashi Yoshinaga (Japanese, active 1640-1680).
