Japanese, likely Meiji Period (1868-1912). A very fine lidded box allover with intricate cloisonne enamel decoration, the top centered by a mandala form cartouche bearing a phoenix in flight with swirling tail feathers, the cartouche reserved to a ground of overlapping chrysanthemum blossoms in orange and blue on a field of gilt scrolls punctuated by triangular fields of diaper patterning in blue, red, and peach, the side walls of lid and body with further corresponding floral decoration with a band of lappets to body base, the box underside with a blue to red chrysanthemum blossom, possibly a depiction of the Imperial Seal of Japan, Order of the Chrysanthemum, to a field of green swirling vines surrounded by a black imbricated band, altogether raised on four gilt bracket feet, the hinged box lid opening to reveal a single gilt compartment.
