A hand colored engraving laid down on board after the original painting by Nicolas Poussin (French, 1594-1665), "Landscape with Orpheus and Eurydice"-1650. Figural allegorical scene depicting the ancient. tragic legend of Orpheus (the son of Apollo and Calliope) and Eurydice; Orpheus sits with his lyre (a gift from his father) with a group of Nymphs who listen to his music intently on the banks of a calm body of water, Orpheus's bride, the beautiful Eurydice, is seated at the far left of the group of attentive Nymphs with an expression of fear, in the distance ships are drug ashore by slaves and a stone castle stands proudly on the far banks of the water. Framed approximately 35.75" x 42.5". Sight approximately 23" x 30.25".
