Continental School, 19th century. "Adoration of the Pauper's Child", oil on wood panel, apparently unsigned. Figural painting reminiscent of ecclesiastic adoration scenes depicting a low-lit street scene with a woman seated on a stoop holding a bundled infant beside a basket of trinkets, with a peasant couple standing over her, the standing woman staring intently at the bundled babe, with a bourgeoisie couple walking past the seated woman, the walking woman staring at the swaddled baby, with a footman also gazing intently at the baby while attending the bourgeoisie woman's long train. With indistinct inscriptions to verso. Framed approximately 20.25" x 18.5". Unframed approximately14.75" x 12.5".
