English, fourth quarter 19th century. An exceptional Victorian black lacquered, parcel gilt and papier mache decorated sewing table, in the manner of Jennens & Bettridge of Birmingham, the hinged rectangular top with serpentine edges inlaid with geometric mother of pearl and centered by a mother of pearl sunburst opening to reveal a purple silk lined fitted interior with assorted compartments, the central compartment lifting up to reveal a tapering work basket, on pierced vasiform shaped trestle end supports and outswept scroll feet, also intricately inlaid with mother of pearl. Table is accompanied with matching bookrest. Apparently table in not marked; locking mechanism is stamped "Patent" with Crown and V.R (likely patent for locking mechanism issued during period of Queen Victoria). Approximate height 27.75", width 21.25", depth 15.25".
