Thomas Downing (American 1928-1985), "Grid Thirty-Three"-1970, oil on canvas, ink signed, titled and dated to verso "Downing 1970 Grid Thirty Three". Color Field painting depicting a grid of circles, with five horizontal lines of circles, each line composed of twelve circles, each circle pale yellow, with deeper yellow ground. With inscription to verso "AIP-13". Unframed approximately 42.925" x 89.25". Note: Downing received his BA in 1948 from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, before moving to New York City where he studied at the Pratt Institute. After a brief tenure in France at the Académie Julian in Paris, Downing moved to Washington D.C. where he would become deeply entrenched in the Washington Color Field movement (also called Color School).
