Edward Sheriff Curtis (American, 1868-1952). A group of two photogravures from Curtis' seminal ethnographic record "The North American Indian" (published between 1907 and 1930), comprising "Shoalwater Bay Profile"-circa 1912, photogravure in brown ink on tissue paper, depicting a bearded man in profile from Shoalwater Bay, with inscriptions to lower margin "From copyright photograph 1912 by E.S. Curtis" and "Shoalwater Bay Profile", with label to verso "The collected Image Evanston Illinois Edward S. Curtis Shoalwater Bay Profile From The North American Indian Vol. 9, 1912 Photogravure on Japanese Tissue Paper"; and "The Old Makah"-circa 1915, photogravure in brown ink on tissue paper, depicting a white haired and bearded man who makes eye contact with the viewer, with inscription to lower margin "From copyright photograph 1915 by E.S. Curtis", with label to verso "The Collected Image Evanston Illinois The Old Makah From The North American Indian Vol. 11, 1915 Photogravure on Japanese Tissue". Each framed approximately 15" x 12". "Shoalwater Bay Profile unframed approximately 8.5" x 5.5". "The Old Makah" unframed approximately 8.5" x 6.125". Note: Edward S. Curtis is counted among the most prominent and important American ethnographic photographers. Over the course of thirty long years, Curtis travelled North America documenting and publishing a visual record of North America's native nations ("The North American Indian", 1907-1930).
