Chinese School, late 19th/ early 20th century. A Large carved soapstone figure of Hotai, the laughing buddha, depicting the deity reclining with rotund belly and chest exposed by a robe hanging off shoulder, his bulbous head and face flanked by pendulous ear lobes, with one arm supporting body weight below and the other arm raised behind back holding a lotus pod root with the pad as a halo behind the figure's head, the figure with incised decoration to body corresponding with natural seams to the stone depicting bats, chrysanthemum blossoms, and other auspicious symbols. Apparently unsigned. Approximate height 12.75", width 20", depth 9.25".
