As a teenager he immigrated with his father to Detroit and attended Michigan's Cranbrook Academy of Art to study metalwork. There, he was exposed to modern Scandinavian design and acquired an appreciation for natural materials and geometric forms. After college, Bertoia produced a number of successful furniture designs for Knoll Associates, but by the mid-1950s, dedicated himself completely to creating fine art sculpture. Always working with metal, Bertoia's creations included large-scale architectural screens, sound sculptures, and smaller-scale geometrical compositions, such as this playful cubic piece. A certificate of authenticity by Harry Bertoia descendant, Val Bertoia (Bertoia Studio), accompanies this lot.
