Zulma Steele (American, 1881-1979) Rolling Hills, Crepuscule Signed "Zulma Steele" l. r. Oil on canvas, 28 x 29 in. (71.1 x 73.6 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Slight canvas warping, surface grime. N.B. Originally from Wisconsin, Zulma Steele moved east and was one of the first artists to live at the Byrdcliffe Arts & Crafts colony in Woodstock, New York. There, she not only painted, but designed furniture, illustrated books, and created her own line of pottery called "Zedware." She trained at a number of institutions: the Art Institute of Chicago, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School. Steele also traveled extensively throughout Europe and trained in Paris with André Lhote in the 1920s.
