Garabed Der Hohannesian (American, 1908-1992) Composition in Blue and Yellow Signed and dated "GARABED DER HOHANNESIAN '40" l. r., signed, inscribed,and titled on the reverse. Gouache on paper, 11 x 19 1/4 in. (27.9 x 48.8 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Speckled abrasions u.l. quadrant., tape remnants around the perimiter of the reverse. N.B. Garabed Der Hohannesian was an acclaimed Boston abstract painter. A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art, he was also a professor of design at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1947 to 1973. Der Hohannesian's work was first shown at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1940 in a group exhibition with other artists described as 'non-objective painters.' Subsequently and throughout his life, his work was exhibited in numerous venues in both solo and group settings throughout the United States. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, currently has eleven works by Der Hohannesian in its collection, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Massachusetts, holds six.
