Continental School, 18th/19th Century Vue de l'Eglise de Vétheuil Unsigned, with a collector's stamp from Michael Mayr (Lugt L1804A) on the reverse, titled on the reverse. Ink and watercolor on blue wove paper, 8 3/8 x 11 5/16 in. (21.4 x 28.8 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Pinhole puncture to center, handling creases, fox marks, minor acid burn, hinge remnants to verso. N.B. Michael Mayr (1796-1870) was an artist and theatrical designer who collected drawings, stamps, and books, often related to the theater. He painted in watercolor, generally topographical views. The picturesque area of Vétheuil in Department Val-d'Oise northwest of Paris was a favorite subject for artists, particularly the Impressionists, and was home to Claude Monet in the late 1870s.
