Miniature of a Girl in Blue, signed "Ellsworth Painter," sight size 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. , in a mahogany veneer frame. Note: The sitter is Mrs. Elvira Warriner. James Sanford Ellsworth (1802-1874) was an itinerant artist who worked primarily in the Connecticut River Valley and the Berkshires from the 1840s to the 1850s, doing miniature watercolors on paper. This three-quarter length portrait of Elvira Warriner standing has one of the typical Ellsworth conventions: the gray, clover-shaped cloud over the sitter's head. Mitchell, catalog of an exhibition presented by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, 1974, p. 21.
