American School, 19th Century Portrait of Henry Holmes (1841-1909) as a Child with a Riding Crop. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 28 1/4 x 23 1/2 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Minor punctures, losses, scattered retouch. N.B. Holmes was a native of Marshfield, Massachusetts, and resided as a life-long bachelor in the family home on Union Street. His mother, Beulah Simmons Sherman Holmes, was a member of the prominent Sherman family of boat builders working on the North River in Marshfield. The sitter was a descendant of both Miles Standish and John Alden, as well as other prominent early colonists, through his mother's line. A full genealogy is available from the consignor, to whom this portrait descended through the Sherman line of the family.
