English, second quarter 19th century. "Portrait of a Stately Man", oil on canvas, inscribed to verso of structure "J. Osborne 1831" likely indication the name of the sitter. Painting depicts a young man in fine dress seated at waist length wearing a black coat with high collar over a white shirt and blue cravat, his right arm atop the arm of a wooden chair, seated before a wall having window in partial view to upper left. Framed approximately 11 1/2" x 10", unframed approximately 7 7/8" x 6 1/2".
