American School, 19th Century Portrait of John Ralli, Esq. / U.S. Consul to the Port of Odessa. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 38 x 32 in., in a carved gilt frame. Condition: Lined, retouched, small repaired puncture, craquelure. N.B. The gentleman pictured may be the same John Ralli, a.k.a. Iannis Ralli (born c. 1875), who was one of the founders of a large international trading company. The Ralli family of Chios dispersed throughout Europe in the 1820s after the massacres perpetrated during the Greek War of Independence, and remained a powerful family in international trade into the 20th century. Ralli traded grain in Odessa for family business interests.
