Carved Figural Cane, attributed to "Schtockschnitzler" Simmons (ac. 1870-1910), Pennsylvania German, Berks County, Pennsylvania, late 19th/early 20th century, the head of a dog with bared teeth and spike collar, old varnished surface, no stand, lg. 34 in. Provenance: Aarne Anton/American Primitive Gallery. Literature: A related example of "Schtockschnitzler" Simmons's work is pictured in George H. Meyer's AMERICAN FOLK ART CANES, (Seattle, 1992), pp. 46-7, fig. 60. Meyer quotes Richard S. Machmer as saying that Simmons was "a late German immigrant who wandered on foot from farm to farm and tavern to tavern, a pack of canes on his back," (p. 189). His given name is unknown.
