Carved Pine Head of a Boy, possibly by Simeon Skillen, early 19th century, old dark natural patina, no stand, ht. 10 1/4, wd. 7, dp. 8 in. Provenance: Hulsey/Kelter. Literature: Nina Fletcher Little's catalog, THE ABBY ALDRICH ROCKEFELLER FOLK ART COLLECTION, (Williamsburg, 1957), p. 300, fig. 143, pictures a bust head whose hair and facial features bear strong resemblance to this head. Little has suggested that an attribution to Skillen might be possible, based on an entry in his account book and presumably on the style of the carving.
