American School, 19th Century Portrait of a Young Lady. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 29 x 24, in a molded gesso frame. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch. N.B. According to Edward Maeder, Curator of Textiles at Historic Deerfield, the style of the lady's dress and coiffure date from 1820-24. His analysis is partly based on the shape of her sleeve, her Elizabeth revival lace collar, ("all the rage in the fashion journals of the day") and coiffure, which retains elements of the neoclassical fashion.
