Nine Carved and Painted Wood Grotesque Architectural Masks, Binghamton, New York, 1897, the masks each different from the others, with applied molding on small rectangular platform above, four painted brown, five painted gray, (minor imperfections), ht. 9 - 9 1/2, lg. 10 3/4 in. Note: According to a note accompanying the lot, the nine carved heads were part of the architectural detail on the Crary Mansion in Binghamton, New York, built in 1897; Elfred H. Bartoo, architect. From 1904 to 1964, it was the home of Columbian Insurance Co. It was torn down in 1964. Marjory B. Hinman, author of Lost Landmarks of Broome County, worked in the building. A facsimile of a photograph of the house, signed by her, accompanies this lot.
