Alice Ravenel Huger Smith (American, 1876-1958) "Poetry" Signed and inscribed "Alice R. H. Smith, Words of the Lord, Bless the Lord" l.r. Watercolor on paper, sight size 29 x 21 3/4 in. (74.0 x 55.0 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered foxing, subtle toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. "Poetry" was one of the works presented to Harry and Talulah McInvaill as a wedding gift. Although the work reflects Harry's poetic aspirations, it was more specifically for Talulah. In 1996, she recalled the work: "(It is) about the things I wrote about, the birds, deer, trees, water, flowers. When I published my first volume of poetry in 1943, the Smiths had a publication party for me. Alice liked my poetry and loved nature as I did; this brought us close. In the corner is the love of the universe, a Biblical inscription 'Oh All Ye Works of the Lord. Bless Ye the Lord. Praise and Magnify Him, Forever'." See also the note for lot 246.
