(54.0 x 24.7 Condition: Subtle toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. Alice Ravenel Huger Smith gives much of the credit for her return to painting after a hiatus in the 1930s and early 1940s to Ensign and would-be poet Harry McInvaill. As he states in his journal, May 17, 1943: "Miss Alice and I have an alliance..., She has agreed to recommence painting if I will continue writing. But yesterday, she attached a rider to our covenant, namely that since she has painted so much more than I have written, that I be required to write now much more than she paints. Which is fair enough." The two kept their creative pact, and Smith continued painting until 1956. The correspondence referenced in this and subsequent notes regarding Smith is housed at the South Carolina Historical Society.
