American School, 19th Century Pair of Portraits of Josiah Butler and His Wife Hannah Jenness Butler. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 29 1/2 x 24 1/2 in., in molded gilt gesso frames. Condition: The former retouched, the latter with scattered retouch, both with craquelure. N.B. Josiah Butler (1779-1854) graduated from Harvard College in 1803 and continued his law studies in Virginia. In 1810 he embarked on a career in politics that culminated in three term service in the U.S. House as New Hampshire representative (15th-17th Congresses). His wife, Hannah Jenness, was born in Deerfield, New Hampshire; Lot 275 is a portrait of their grandson James Clinton Butler. Genealogical information is provided with the lot.
