Attributed to Thomas Ball (American, 1819-1911) Portrait of a Young Gentleman. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 26 x 22 in., unframed. Condition: Lined, repaired, retouch. N.B. The lot is accompanied by a note in period script reading "Painted by Thomas Ball a great sculptor and painter the man who so many years was painting a picture of Christ." After 1851, Ball devoted himself to works of sculpture, prominent among which are the Washington monument in Boston. In 1891 he published an autobiography titled "My Three Score Years and Ten."
