Attributed to Samuel Waldo (American, 1783-1861) and William Jewett (American, 1795-1874) Pair of Portraits of Gentleman and his Wife. Unsigned. Oil on panel, 35 x 27 in., in gilt frames. Condition: Very minor scattered retouch, surface grime. N.B. In 1812, Waldo & Jewett formed a partnership (which lasted until 1856), and collaborated in painting portraits of prominent New Yorkers. Waldo, the senior partner, had studied in London at the Royal Academy, and at the studios of West and Copley. Waldo's 1817 life-sketch of General Andrew Jackson is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Provenance: This pair of portraits descended to the consignor through the Crook family, early immigrants from England to White Plains, New York.
