American School, 19th Century Hudson River View at Sunset. Signed "Redpath 1867" l.l. Oil on panel, 12 1/2 x 15, unframed. Condition: Minor split u.c., scattered minor losses. N.B. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., has in its collection another Redpath Hudson scene, Mounting of the Guard, a gift of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch. Redpath's identity has never been fully established. See Debra Chotner's American Naive Paintings: National Gallery of Art (Washington, 1992), pp. 319-320. Her research identifies a number of men named Redpath listed in the 1840 and 50 census. According to Chotner, another Redpath Hudson scene, Cozzen's Landing, was pictured in an advertisement in Antiques 45 (June, 1944), p. 282.
