Painted and Grained Chest Over Drawers, Tyringham, Massachusetts, 1840, signed "Solomon Garfield 1840," the rectangular hinged top lifts above a cavity and two drawers on a cyma-curved skirt with an integral central pendant flanked by high arced feet, which also flank the side skirt shaping; the top, sides, and skirt with red and black graining simulating rosewood while the facade outside the cavity is putty and sponge grained with comb graining in outline above the drawer facades which are grained to imitate mahogany, original form, graining, hinges, escutcheons, and wooden pulls, ht. 35 3/4, case wd. 40, wd. at top 41 1/4, case dp. 17 1/4, dp. at top 17 3/4 in. N.B. The form in this piece, as well as all of the simulated rosewood graining and some of the putty and sponge graining, is identical to an item in Skinner's June 11, 2000 Americana sale, lot 133.!
