William Hogarth (English, 1697-1764). A collection of four hand colored engravings from the artist's "Industry and Idleness" series published in England in 1747, the compositions intended to illustrate to working children the possible rewards of hard work and the recourse apparent if it is not done. Collection comprising of "The IDLE 'PRENTICE return'd from Sea, & in a Garret with a common Prostitute" and "The INDUSTRIOUS 'PRENTICE grown rich & Sheriff of London" in one frame, and "The Fellow 'Prentices at their Looms" and "The INDUSTRIOUS 'PRENTICE performing the Duty of a Christian" in the second frame. Each engraving depicts a group of working children within a scene enacting either admirable or shameful activities. Framed approximately 30" x 23", sight size approximately 20.75" x 13.5".
