American School, 19th Century/20th Century Portrait of Dr. William Burnet, Surgeon General of the Army. Unsigned, sitter identified by label affixed to reverse. Oil on canvas, 29 1/2 x 24 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, varnish inconsistencies. N.B. The label further states that Dr. Burnet, a native of Elizabeth, New Jersey educated at Nassau Hall, became a prominent Whig and member of the Continental Congress. The doctor was at dinner with Benedict Arnold when Major Andre's capture was announced, forcing Arnold to flee. The portrait descended in the Burnet family and thereby to a Boston estate.
