Condition: Retouched, paint loss to lower edge, yellowed varnish. N.B. Judge John Hall (1783-1847), founded this school in Ellington, Connecticut in 1829 as an Athenaeum for boys. The school, regarded as one of the foremost classical academies in the country during the judge's tenure there, educated three hundred boys from the United States and abroad.
