Italian School, 19th Century The New Volcano Discovered in July 1831... Unsigned, titled below. Oil on board, 18 x 24 3/4 in., in a black painted frame. Condition: Scattered retouch, scattered minor losses and abrasions, not examined out of frame. N.B. The volcano, which lies off the western tip of Sicily, was originally discovered in 1632 but lay dormant for almost two centuries before erupting again in 1831. It has been variously known as Ethemeral, Giulia, Ferdinandea, and Graham. Now, the volcano is again submerged in shoal water.
