Herculaneum Creamware Jug, England, early 19th century, black transfer printed, obverse "WASHINGTON" (McCauley 65), an oval design with a medallion portrait on a monument surmounted by a wreath, birth and death dates below, flanked by an eagle and grieving woman, an upper ribbon is inscribed "WASHINGTON IN GLORY," the lower ribbon "AMERICA IN TEARS"; reverse, a transfer of an American sailing vessel, beneath the spout an American eagle above the inscription "HERCULANEUM POTTERY LIVERPOOL," incised mark on the base, (imperfections), ht. 10 in.
