Liverpool Creamware Jug, England, early 19th century, black transfer printed, obverse "WASHINGTON" (McCauley 57), his portrait surrounded by three female figures, Justice, Liberty and Victory, with a cherub above, a scrolling ribbon inscribed with the names of fifteen states and stars surrounds the oval reserve; reverse "VIRTUE AND VALOUR" (McCauley 199), depicting a Continental Soldier standing with his foot on the head of the British Lion with soldiers and ships in the background, the scene surrounded by military devices and a ribbon with inscription, beneath the spout a monogram in a cartouche above an American eagle, a floral spray beneath the handle, (imperfections), ht. 10 1/4 in.
