William Howard Yorke (Canadian/British, 1847-1921) The American Clipper Ship Raphael. Signed "W.H. Yorke" l.r., ship identified on stern, flying an American flag, shown port tack, weather view facing left of picture, displaying all sails excepting cross jack and double topsails, British bark in distance off bow. Oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 35 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch u.l. N.B. The artist was a prolific ship portraitist active in Liverpool from 1865. Carleton, Norwood and Co. launched the Raphael at Rockport, Maine, on October 28, 1875.
