Lucius A. Briggs (American, 1852-1931) The American Ship Pocahontas and Whaling Scene. Signed "L.A. Briggs" l.l., ship identified on bow. Watercolor on paper, sight 16 x 22 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Scattered stains and foxmarks, overall toning, not examined out of frame. N.B. The Pocahontas was built in Wareham in 1821 for Elijah Swift, a member of a prominent whaling family of Falmouth and New Bedford. Over a period of more than thirty years, the ship made eleven trips to the Pacific as a whaler under various captains.
