Attributed to Robert Dodd (British, 1748-1815) An Homeward Bound East Indiaman and An Outward Bound East Indiaman. Unsigned, titled below. Mixed media including watercolor, gouache and pen and ink on paper, sheet sizes 17 3/8 x 25 and 17 1/8 x 26 1/2 in., respectively, framed. Condition: The first hinged to mat, repaired tears at sides, loss to l.r. margin edge, tape residues to reverse, a few scattered creases and foxmarks, the second hinged to mat, repaired tears and creases, scattered fox marks, stains and abrasions, tape residues to reverse, nick to l.r. margin. N.B. Dodd was a painter who concentrated on marine subjects from 1771-1813. From 1782 he engraved and published his own work. See lot 16 for Chinese Export School renderings of these views. The absence of the Cross of St. Patrick in the Union flag dates the views before 1803. Backings have labels from the Old Print Shop, New York.
