John Wesley Jarvis (American, 1780-1840) Portrait of Col. James Burn Unsigned, identified on label on the reverse. Oil on canvas (mounted), 20 1/8 x 18 3/16 in. (51.1 x 46.2 cm), unframed. Condition: Cut down, scattered retouch, scattered surface abrasions, surface grime, craquelure. Provenance: From the collection of The Brooklyn Museum of Art. N.B. Colonel Burn was Captain of the Cavalry in 1799 until promoted to Colonel of the 2nd light Dragoons in 1812. He died in 1823, outside Philadelphia. This portrait was commissioned for General Wilkinson, under whom Colonel Burn served.
